Go through each program on your drive and see if it contains data that
you need to capture, ie, word processing docs, financial records,
lottery numbers, bookmarks, favorites, addresses, email, icons, cursors,
etc.  You should have all your shareware/freeware software backed up in
the original format (.exe or .zip) that it came in--saving installed
programs probably won't work.

W95 Restore Disk and Installation Procedures.

1.  If you don't have a start up disk that was made during the
installation of W95, create one by going to control panel, add/remove
programs, start up disk tab.

2.  Add your CD driver to the start up disk--it will normally have the
letters CD in its name and will have a .sys extension.  You may have to
look in a CDRom installation disk or the config.sys or config.dos files
on your hard drive to find the name of the driver file.  Either look in
the Windows/Command folder or do a find on Mscdex.exe and add a copy of
it to the start up disk.

3.  Using Notepad, make a text file, name it config.sys and add it to
the start up disk.  It should look like this; however, substitute your
CD driver name for atapicd.sys which is the CD driver in this example:

DEVICE=atapicd.sys /D:MSCD000
DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS

4.  Using Notepad, make a text file, name it autoexec.bat and add it to
the start up disk.  It should look like this:

MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000 /M:15 /V

5.  Always test the start up disk to make sure it works properly.
Before you start, open Windows Explorer and determine where the
setup.exe file is located on the W95 CD and make a note of the path
needed to get there.

  a.  Insert the floppy restore disk and the W95 CD and reboot.  When
you get to an A: prompt, look at the entry immediately above the byte
data and note the letter that was assigned to your CD drive (let's
assume it is D:).

  b.  At the A: prompt, type:  D:   (the drive letter) and hit enter.
Let's assume your setup.exe file is in a folder called Win95 located
at:  D:\Win95.

  c.  The previous action put you at an D: prompt so type:  CD Win95
and hit enter (in this instance, the CD stands for change directory).

  d.  This puts you in the Win95 folder so type:  DIR    and hit enter.
(Note:  DIR is a directory list.  If at any time you get lost, use it to
help you determine where you are.)  If you see the directory list, your
restore disk is working properly.

6.  If you have backed up your data and are ready to load W95, you have
to determine whether or not to format the hard drive.  In most
instances, better results are obtained by loading W95 to a clean drive.
If you want to upgrade your current system, skip step a.

  a.  At the prompt, type:  A:     and hit enter.  At the A: prompt,
type:  Format C:     and hit enter.  Follow the on screen prompts.  When
you get a question about a label, type: Win95 and hit enter.

  b.  When the format is complete, type:  D:    (the letter assumed to
be assigned to your CDRom from above) and hit enter.  At the D: prompt,
type:  CD Win95    and hit enter.   At the Win95 prompt, type:
Setup.exe      and hit enter. Follow the on-screen prompts to install
the system.
