How to SETUP Microsoft Faxing in Win98...

First, a brief recap...

Go through the installation of wms.exe on the Win98 CD. When you finish the
setup routine for WMS (Windows Messaging) you should have an Inbox icon on
your desktop. I didn't. So I rebooted and it showed up. Personally, I'd
reboot anyway after this first step.

Next click on awfax.exe on the CD and go through the MS Fax setup routine.
It will want you to restart your computer at the end. Go ahead and do that.

The part you have been waiting for...

Now click on the Inbox icon on your desktop. A setup wizard will come up and
lead you through the setup process. (You don't do anything with the Mail or
the Microsoft Post Office control panel devices if you only want the fax
capability - which keeps you from having to face embarrassing questions like
"Where's the Post Office?" If you want the e-mail capability I don't know
what you need to do -- I use Outlook Express.)

The first thing that comes up after you click the Inbox icon is a box that
asks you which Windows Messaging features you want. There were two:
Microsoft Fax and Microsoft Mail. Uncheck the Microsoft Mail one and go to
the next section of the wizard. The wizard will ask you which modem to use,
where to put your address book, one other thing (I forgot what -- it's
been more than 10 minutes since I did this :-), and if you want to setup
your system to automatically receive faxes. Just keep hitting OK or Next
and let the wizard do its thing. When the wizard is finished you're done!

Now to use the fax stuff you click on the Inbox icon and a window will open
up. This is your basic control center for Windows Mailing and Faxing. To compose a new
fax go to Compose on the menu bar and select New Fax... A Compose New Fax
wizard will walk you through getting your fax ready to send (the address
book is nice and complicated just like the one in Outlook Express). Once you
have selected who you want to send the fax to and which cover page you want
to use (there are four types included and you can create your own) you get
to attach the item(s) that you want to send. The Help stuff seems to be
pretty good, but there are also a lot of little messages right in the dialog
boxes so just pay attention and you will probably be able to figure it out
without resorting to the Help.

To send a fax from another program (like Word or Works) you finish working
on whatever it is that you are going to send and then select Print. Select
Microsoft Fax as the printer to use. The Compose New Fax wizard will pop up
and you will again get to choose who to send the fax to, the cover page,
etc.

When you finish installing everything you will have a Fax folder in your
Start menu. From there you can Compose New Fax, and create new cover pages
with the Cover Page Editor. Since you have those two items *I think* you can
turn off (not delete -- just remove from the desktop) the Inbox icon (using
TweakUI). I don't like a lot of Icons laying around on my desktop (it's that
obsessive/compulsive thing :-). There will also be a Windows Messaging icon
in the Start menu. This appears to do the same thing as clicking on the
Inbox icon.
