I have Office 97.  I know that Find Fast eats resources, so I ran MSCONFIG
and disabled Find Fast and Office Startup (osa.exe) in the startup tab.
After a reboot, the programs are checked off again.  Why can't I disable
these?  Is there another way to do this?

Delete findFast completely:

1. Use the FindFast applet in Control Panel to delete all the
indexes it created (Office will continue to use them if you
don't and they'll get progressively more out-of-date with
     each passing day).

2. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to kill FindFast if it's still running
     in the background.

3. Remove it's shortcut from your Startup folder:
     (%windir%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\
by default). This'll stop it running ever again.

4. Finally, delete the FindFast.CPL file from
     %windir%\System.

Note: %windir% is your Windows folder.

There's no need to reboot. It's now gone for good.

You may wish to rename any remaining FindFast files.
Do a 'find' for FFAST*.* and FINDFA*.*

Next time you need to re-install Office, use the Custom
Install option and de-select it (it's under Office Tools).

You can also re-run Office Setup to remove FindFast, but
you must remove the indexes first.

Hope this helps,
