getting an error message saying it cannot display the page after I

solutions ? Thank you for your help

*This, of course, assumes that Windows Update is "up" and not being
worked on by Microsoft and that is reason you can't get in.
*If you just updated from a clean install this probably won't help you
*Any control might be at fault - not just those mentioned

Many people who try to access Windows Update are met with
an
error message or a blank screen, never actually updating anything. I see two
possible reasons for this. The first is some files are not being removed
from the cache even though you have tried to clean it by using the
dialog boxes in Internet Explorer's properties menus and the second is a
conflict occurred when certain controls were being loaded into Downloaded
Program Files.
To really clean up that cache, after using the clear cache/history
applets in IE's properties menu return to the Windows folders and
highlight the Temporary Internet Files entry. Right click on it and a pop-up
menu should appear. Select explore and you should now be facing a split
screen window with sub-folders on the left and the sub-folder contents on the
right. Find the 4 sub-folders with gibberish for names-a bunch of
letters and numbers in no specific order or logical name. These 4 folders make
up the cache used by IE and why they don't have a normal name is still a
mystery to me too. Highlight the folder on the left and the left-over
files should appear on the right. If the cache is properly cleaned nothing
should appear on the right. If there are still files on the right, select
them all and then right click on them. Again, a pop up menu should appear and
you should select delete from that menu. If you get a message that files
are still in use or file access violation or something to the effect, you
must do a full reboot and start the process again. (I guess I should have
pointed out you can't do this while online earlier--sorry). Repeat this for
all 4 sub-folders until they have no files within them. This might be the
solution but most likely you will also have to do the following also.
The other factor that causes Windows Update to error out, is a
conflict with loaded controls (conveyor.ocx and/or cdmwu.ocx in particular) in
the downloaded program files folder in C:\windows. The simplest way to see
if you have a conflict is opening the folder Downloaded Program Files and
turn on the detail view from the task bar. If the status of either are
"damaged" or "unplugged" then you have a conflict. To double check,
close the
folder so you are back to viewing all files and folders in C:\windows. Right
click on Downloaded Program Files and select Properties from the pop up
menu. The "contains" entry should show any number of files and "0"
folders. If
it shows 1 or more folders you have the makings of a conflict situation.
The way I found to resolve this takes a bit of time to fix. First
you must reboot and initiate the Start-Up menu either by the old "hit F8
at program start" or holding down the "CTRL" button during post. Select
"Command Prompt only". At the "C" prompt type without the quotes
"cd
windows\downlo~1".
Within this folder do a "dir" command and look for any
entries
like "Conflict.1 or Conflict.2" or similar. Even though the name has a
"dot" in it, these are not files but directories so don't be fooled. Change
directory to the first conflict.1 folder by typing without the quotes "cd
conflict.1". Within this folder some files are hidden so execute the following w/o
the
quotes, "attrib -h -r -s *.* " Now doing a "dir" should
show 2 or
more files in this directory. Erase all files until nothing is left in the
directory. Now Execute the command w/o quotes "cd .." (cd-space-dot-dot) and
you should be at "c:\windows\downloaded program files" prompt. Now
type "deltree conflict.1" and select yes to erase the directory. Repeat
this for all the conflict.? folders you might have. Reboot back into windows
after finishing. Now open the Downloaded Program Files and delete the
entries for Conveyor and Cdmwu if there are any.
Now go back online and try to access Windows Update. Successful
replacement of the controls are indicated by the popup tag asking you
if its ok to install the controls. Select yes and take care to let the
controls download and install properly before opening the next page. Have to be
patient here or you might jam it up again. The other control usually
downloads at the updated driver part of Windows Update. Again select
yes to the pop-up tag and make sure it installed before moving on.
