Subject: Great site man!
Hi Harry,
Just to help you even more with your New Windows life,
I'd like to tell you a little fun secret concerning
installation of Windows 98, advice you (as a former Mac user)
might be interested in (I didn't see it being mentioned).
First, to understand it all, some historic knowledge:
In DOS it was always common sense that every executable
had a command helpfile included by the creator.
That is to say: you could type (for instance)
del /?
and would get all sorts of (often even undocumented)
interesting optional parameter commands for using del.exe
As the [Win98 CD]:\setup.exe and [Win98 CD]:\Win98\setup.exe
are still DOS and built with that in mind,
you should try this command on yar 98 CDrom:
setup /?
see what I mean?
you will find that you can in most cases
speed up Windows 98 installation by a whole lot,
just by placing some parameters after the command!
That way you can skip the creation of a startupdisk,
skip scandisk, skip advertisements etc. etc.
in many cases (if you know what you're doin')
setup /im /id /is /iq /in
can easily be done without problems.
So, remember the /? parameter for DOS-executables
( .com files often have it too), and you're always
a few steps ahead of everone else in the hood...
Ever so often you get to peek into the corporate stuff
the creators didn't want the general public to know.
Of course, please DO add it to your extensive
Win98 installation info on your site!
I'll link you up.
Greetings,
Julius
