Tweakui For Windows 98

If you are unfamiliar with Tweakui For 98 please spend some time at  PCForrest's Self-Help Site which has an excellent resource page on Tweakui. Then check out the following information for installing.  Tweakui is found on the Windows 98 Gold CD in tools/reskit/powertoy. It is not available on the Windows 98 SE CD. Even though Tweakui has no Tab for IE 5 the IE 4 Tab works with IE 5. Please read on.

If you've installed Tweakui off of the Windows 98 CD you'll note that it  has a couple of *bugs*, well more like annoyances, and  they can be pretty frustrating. One  has to do with the Desktop Tab  "Create as file" function not working correctly for creating a Control Panel Folder. The other has to do with giving incorrect information for various functions under the IE4 Tab when you right click an item to get the "What is this?" dialogue.  I've read that the Auto Logon function has some problems as well. Last year I found a post on the subject in one of the newsgroups and decided to uninstall the version from the CD and  install an earlier beta of Tweakui. Since switching versions I do not seem to  have many of the problems others report like their changes not sticking, or boxes becoming unchecked (i.e. drives under the My Computer Tab), or difficulties with  Paranoia Tab items. I don't know if they are  related to the CD version but then again perhaps they are.

As you can see below there are two distinct differences in the versions. One is in the size of tweakui.cpl (which is the applet) and the other is the creation date. The question I asked myself was "Could the difference in size have something to do with the glitches?" While the version on the CD may be a newer version it seems that the downloaded version  works more efficiently with no problems. If you wish, for comparison purposes only of course ;-), you can download the older beta at this link Tweakui 98 and  Check here for additional info about Tweakui Bugs .
