This ought to stump 'em at the Cleaning Forum!

I'm trying to sort of empty out the back bedroom so Leslee's son won't
disappear when he goes in there next month. Anyhow, I had a big box of pots
& pans that have been put away for almost 6 years since the hurricane. Some
of the lids have petrified lizard poop on them. I can't get it off! They're
shiny metal & I'm stumped. Any ideas?

What about boiling it off? Perhaps fill the pans with water and put the lids
on upside-down and boil/steam until the pertified poop becomess less pertified.
Might be a thought....

#### Ginger, I would try hot water and household ammonia. (be sure to cover
with a lid, plastic bag or some such, to control the odor of the ammonia.)
Lizzards eat insects, so their poop will have quite a lot of fatty content,
which the ammonia should help to remove.

After six years, do you really need them? Lizards (we have one) can carry
samonella and we don't want you exposed to that. Think I'd toss them and replace
any that you really need than take a chance of exposure.

Soak 'em in vinegar to loosen the poop. Then soak in bleach, rinse and run through the dishwasher. Disinfecting them shouldn't be the problem but getting the petrified poop off might. You might also try a pet-stain remover first.

#### Almost anything can be cleaned up. If Ginger's pans are nice pans, it would be very wasteful to "pitch 'em" because of a little lizzard scat. Salmonella can effectively be killed with heat.
Chicken and eggs, commonly carry salmonella, but we continue to eat them, using the correct precautions. Oh yes, and don't forget where eggs come from. If you have ever gathered eggs, you may recall, they often, need to be "cleaned up" before using them. The ones we get in the tidy egg cartons, at the store, have already, conveniently been cleaned up for us(so we don't have to "think" about what was on the eggs.) hee hee.
Turtles are also known to carry salmonella, but folks continue to swim in
lakes, rivers and ponds where those reptiles live.

Bonny's right. These pans had never been used & it's on the lids, not inside so I'm not going to throw them away. I've got a paper towel soaked in ammonia sitting on a lid now & we'll see if that works after I throw some boiling water on them.
Is Oxy-Clean the stuff advertised on TV all the time? I've toyed with
ordering it.

Ginger, to help scrape the softened scat off, try using an old credit card, it's less abrasive than a knife or scouring pad.
I use old credit cards for all kinds of things around the house. You can scrape off that burned on macaroni with one or get weird specs off glass. I have a 6 ft. rain forest vivarium that gets a lot of calcium buildup on the glass, a little vinegar or glass cleaner and a credit card go a long way to earning their keep. Can be used inside aquariums for algae as well, though be careful with anything you use on acrylic tanks.

Well, if all that gentle soaking doesn't get off the gunk, you might wanna try what I'd do: put something inside lid to brace it, cover w/newspaper or paper towel to keep the stuff from flying, and then try gently whacking it w/hammer! If gentle doesn't work, try firm! Might knock enuf of the pile off to get the rest to soften. I know, I know, but you're NOT supposed to take ALL your frustration out on the lizard poop in the first whack!
Have you tried calling the zoo/a pet store? Gotta be someone else there who
has to clean up after lizards... Ammonia fumes would get old really fast for me.

I once took an all-metal (no bakelite handle) pan that I thought was ruined
(baked on rice 1" deep--no lie; black, crusty...) and put it in the
self-cleaning oven. Of course, it gets to something like 500-degrees-plus, so
you can't do it with anything but all metal.

boiling in water for 15 min will take dried on paint off of metal. i have a 75-year old house with layers and layers of paint on the door hinges that i want to save (they are distinctive and cannot be replaced). i tested one by boiling it for 15-20 min (i'm bad about timers!) 90% of it came off with a paper towel! i reboiled the stubborn pieces...voila! done!
i've tried oxi-clean also. it works great for some things, but is completely useless for others.
good luck!
i read one suggestion that reccomended adding arm and hammer (?) something
(it comes in a small box in the laundry section). that might help the boiling to
do a better job, but i'm a happy camper here! btw, all the flat pieces were very
easy; my only problem is that cute round thingy at the top of the hinge pin.
good luck!

I tried ammonia, vinegar, Goo Gone, WD40, boiling water. Nothing has worked
so far. Then we ran out of water so the next try will have to wait until
tomorrow when I switch cisterns. I'll let you know if anything works. Gonna try
dishwasher soap & laundry detergent next. It's like it's embedded in the
metal so I'm only going to use the dishwasher as a last resort. Don't want to
cook it on any further. I don't think there's a germ left on it.

#### Ginger, this has been on my mind and I was thinking about how bird
droppings on a car, will damage the paint if not removed soon. That is due to
the fact that the droppings are acidic. So I reasoned that the lizzard poop
would possibly be either acidic or alkaline; either of which could corrode
metal, especially if it is aluminum. If this is true, you may have damage spots
where the poop has actually bonded with the metal. Once you get the poop off
(sorry the ammonia idea didn't work) you will be able to tell if the metal is
damaged. Sure hope this is NOT the case. If it is, then very fine steel wool
might help. Don't you just HATE it when you think your things are safely packed
away and some critter messes them up?!!!!

Its something in the foaming action with the soap. Whatever you may have...spray it on...let it set until its no longer foamy, (it will reduce to liquid) and hopefully as its breaking down it will also be breaking down the lizard stuff.~~~

Ok, I read this on the cleaning forum a while back. It was a thread for how to get old, burned on gook off stove top drip pans. We all know how difficult that is and most people just give up and replace them. Put the lids in a large plastic trash bag and put ammonia in there and close the bag and either tie the ends off tightly or use a tie wrap. Let it sit overnight. The fumes do the work of breaking down the gunk. It's worth trying since you are out of water until tomorrow anyway.
Another suggestion about the drip pans was to put them in a large pan with water and dishwasher powder and boil. This was claimed to make them new looking again. Do you have a pot large enough to hold your lids and give this a try?
Let us know if this or anything else works.

Okay Ginger, as long as you PROMISE not to have me for dinner on a night when you've cooked with them, I'll tell you a rememdy that hasn't been recommended yet:
Take one of the defecated lids, (I was going to say defective but the other
applies) place it on your head on a night when the moon is full. Go out into the
ocean, (must be salt water- how convenient for you!) and turn around 3 complete
circles keeping the lid on your head. Say these words as you do, "I AM
DOMESTIC EARTH MOTHER".
After completing the turns take off your bathing suit and cover preferred body
part with lid. Run onto the beach and roll in the sand. When done, go back to
your place and make a batch of Margaritas and drink the entire lot. The next
morning I promise one of the following:
either your pot lids will be spotless,
or you just won't care...
Good luck!

it, my apologys, but it almost ruined my hair. It strips everything out of it
including natural oils, hair color etc. So we just use it for cleaning. Hey its

Hi Ya Ginger. I heard about your poop problem and thought I'd try to give you a

or metal polish. Heaven knows those dang lids are going to be the cleanest lids
in history. If you can't get it completely off, then I say, set them out for the
lizards to poop all over them until they are consistent in color. As far as
etiquette goes, just make sure the little buggers use toilet paper. Good luck.

I agree with BonnyGranny, that the metal has been damaged. You might have to go buy yourself a dremel and use the buffer attachment and see if you can buff it off. Also, you might try buying a box of water softener and soaking it over night..... but the metal is probably damaged!
You could just use some Varathane and use the poop as a second handle! I also

This thread is killing me! I'm LMAO, and mind you I live by myself, it's 11:20 p.m. and I'm sure the nice young men in the white coats are gonna be a knocking on my door at any moment! I just hope they read this thread before carting me off!
Ginger - I suggest bleach, but then again like I've told future dh "Bleach is your friend." I clean EVERYTHING with it!
So, when I get carted off to that great big padded room, would someone e-mail
future dh and tell him where he can pick up his fiancee? Thanks in advance.

cookware...are you sorry now?

Ginger, Bet you didn't know you would get so much "help", did you.
I'm dying here... Sittin' all by myself laughing (excuse me while I go get my
depends, ahhh, thks) and dreamin' about those cabana boys.... Surely, they will
rescue you from the ocean.... You and your lids. I think a jackhammer would
probably get the poop off. BTW, how big were the lizards??? Not iguana. Maybe
like those little green ones? Must have had their whole family there who said
"Hey, let's all poop on Ginger's lids". Nasty critters!!

Ginger, stop working so hard. Just spot weld some little metal lizards around
the poop for a decorative touch. Soon everyone on the island will be wanting to
know where you got your exclusive designer pans. You would quit your job and
promote this new line of poopware. You would become rich and famous. Of course,
Leslee would want in on this because you said it was all her fault, but what the
heck?

####
Ginger of St.Thomas fame,
Had packed away her pans,
But when she got 'em out again
Something had fouled up her plans.
Some sneaky little reptiles
Had taken rude liberties
And turned her lovely cookware,
Into metallic lizzard potties.
As days and nights had progressed
Those lizzard droppings accrued
And as they dried in the tropic air
To the metal lids they had glued.
Now Ginger had a giant dilemma,
How to remove these fossilized scats.
Should she douse 'em with some OxyClean
Or soak in ammonia filled vats?
She questioned a bunch of people
And received many a solution;
They offered ideas and theories
But nothing would make the poop-run.
GooGone, vinegar, bleach and WD40,
Credit card might scrape the goop,
Boiling hot water wouldn't touch 'em;
Nothing served to blast off the poop.
"Pitch 'em out" some folks said,
But our Ginger is no quitter
"I'll try anything" she said
"From Voo Doo to Kitty Litter."
She wore a lid upon her head
While wading in the ocean, chanting
"Domestic Earth Mother, am I."
Guzzling gingerale and panting
And still the hardened little piles,
Clung tight to their metal homes.
Ginger knows something will work;
It might be in witch's tomes.
And so we leave our Ginger
With dilema unsolved and undone.
One day the pans will be shiny again;
But for now, It sure has been fun.

WoW! May I have your autograph Bonny? That was great and right on target too.
Oh yea I would have asked for yours Ginger because you are becoming famous for

Ginger, it appears to me you now have a hobby - those lids.
I think you're all overlooking the obvious here...we all remove similar stuff
all the time...we use...TOILET PAPER!!!Get some cheap, coarse stuff, like the
hotels and stores all have, that can remove human skin, it oughta have no
problem with lizard poop!! LOL.

I like that..it has a good ring to it..Ginger the lizard poop lady. I say add
some dishes to the room so you have matching sets...do they really have to cure
for 6 years though?

Hey, I think Joyce has a point there. What brand are they? Call the
manufacturer and ask if they have a lifetime warranty against lizard poop. (Any
good brand should). Hopefully, they would get such a laugh they will send you
new poop-free lids!

#### Of course, you know, we have been missing an obvious opportunity here.
We could all rush down to St. Thomas, stay with Ginger and collect lizzard scats
and sell them as " Super-Lizzard-Poo-Glue". We could become wealthy if
we get the right marketing scheme.
bye, BG
