The Crazed Squirrel Of Stoney Creek
Gary and I love to play golf at a place called Stoney Creek Golf Club. One weekend a few years ago we went with our friends Tom and Cay Boyette to play a few rounds. Cay and I drive the golf carts while our husbands hit the ball and then hunt for it! Stoney Creek has a lot of hickory nut trees on the course , and at each stop we would make to look for the golf ball, I took that time to pick up nuts to bring home to feed to our squirrels. We don’t have hickory nut trees in my neighborhood and I thought it would be a nice change from the corn and peanuts I usually put out for them. I gather all sizes of the hickory nuts , my Mama loves them and you can’t get a lot of meat from the nut anyway , so the big ones, I keep separate from the smaller squirrel food. We had played quite a few holes when Gary hit a ball into the woods and was going to find it or die trying, so Cay and I parked our carts next to the wooded area in the shade and began talking. Shortly thereafter, I noticed a little squirrel running up and down a huge oak tree about 20 ft. from my cart. He would run down the tree and search the ground for a few seconds and then run back up the tree , come back down for a few seconds then run back up again. We watched this circle of climbing up and down while we talked for a few minutes more when Cay said," Pat, why don’t you throw that little squirrel a few hickory nuts , I bet he would like some of them." Of course , being the generous soul that I am, I reached into the bag that held the BIG hickory nuts and grabbed a handful of the biggest nuts I could find and tossed them within a few inches of the base of the tree, so the squirrel would see them and not be afraid to gather the nuts and take them home for dinner!
The squirrel did see the nuts and ran down the tree to investigate and did indeed grab a few nuts and ran back up the tree. Having our curiosity satisfied , we continued to chat and enjoy the cool breeze, when I heard something drop onto the roof of my golf cart. At first I thought , oh it must have been a twig or piece of bark from the tree, then I heard another “POP” on the roof of the golf cart. We noticed the squirrel running down the tree again getting the nuts that I had thrown and quickly going back to his perch in the oak tree. It wasn’t long after this , that I heard another pop , but this time something hit me. Again I thought nothing of it , but moved the cart a little in case a branch or something was about to fall. Oh I think I moved that cart about 10 feet or so when I felt another “something” hit the top of my shoulder. Cay saw it this time and said "Pat, a hickory nut just hit you , that little squirrel probably dropped one going back up the tree." I had gotten out of the cart to walk over to where Cay was standing when “POP” Another hickory nut hit me , this time on top of my head. I moved a few more times but, every time I moved a nut would hit me. That nutty squirrel was THROWING the nuts I kindly threw to him for food, back at me, hitting me with the proficiency the Atlanta Braves would kill for. That squirrel followed me at least 20 feet , throwing the prized nuts I had gathered for my Mama at my head and hitting me every time. I guess he felt that I was a threat to his dinner gathering and was wanting me to leave his territory! Well, by this time the guys had found the golf ball and walked over to see what the commotion was all about, arriving just in time to see Cay hysterically laughing and me jumping around dodging hickory nuts. The conversation that followed went something like this. “ If I hadn’t seen it, I never would have believed it” “I saw it and I still don’t believe it, are you sure it was a squirrel?” “Well, it wasn’t the tree throwing the nuts at me!” We left the golf course shortly after that, Gary Tom and Cay laughing their heads off and me toting my prized nuts. It will be a snowy day in July before I will try to feed the crazed squirrel of Stoney Creek again!

What a cute story Pat!!
The only squirels we have around here, live in the rocks of the breakwaters by the ocean, and they have scrawny tails.
I loved watching the big pretty ones when we used to go camping up north. Do you have chipmunks too? They are just the cutest!!!!

Thanks guys! This really happened to me and friend and we still laugh about it. Kayelle, we do have chipmunks and I just adore them. I am trying to get one to be brave enough to come to the deck and get a peanut now!
:lol Caroline!

Flynflower I think you may be related to my Sister. She says she has a squirrel that knocks on her door everyday, so she will give him peanuts. Up until I read your story, along with the fact my Sister is turning 70 in December I was starting to think maybe she was getting to be one fry short of a happy meal! Just goes to show you, the truth can be stranger than fiction!
Loved your story!

Spunky, My Mom and Dad had a squirrel that would come several times a day and knock on the glass door for a peanut! He finally got to where he would take peanuts from Daddy's hands. After my Daddy died, a little chipmunk would appear everyday for a peanut, he would come in the kitchen and take one from my Mom's hand. He still does. Mom, of course thinks Dad sent him. She never trained him like she did Sparkey the Squirrel!

! I can believe it! ! My DD lives in a wooded area of a suburb..some of the tales she's told me of the highjinks the squirrels do there are hilarious! Last fall, one of the squirrels kept stealing my fritillaria bulbs I was trying to plant.
